Changing Relationships
Washington Art Education Association (WAEA) Student Exhibition
March 1–June 1

This year’s annual student exhibition originates from teachers and students working with the artwork and ideas from the special exhibition Hug: Recent Work by Patricia Piccinini at the Frye in the fall of 2007.

Teachers were encouraged to bring their students to the exhibition and use the Educator’s Guide and self-guided materials to discuss Piccinini’s artwork with their students. Students were asked to consider the following questions: How far will we go to undo the damage we have done to the environment? Do you think it is a good idea to create new life to help an endangered animal? How is our understanding of the natural world changing? The result of this inquiry is evident in the artwork created for this exhibition.

Clicks and Cuts: Sound Retooled
Teen Art Exhibition
March 1–June 1

Audio and sculptural artworks made by teens during the SHFT Fall 2007 workshop Sound Dust, taught by artist Susan Robb, are on display in the Education Wing. In this program, students explored the world of sound through active listening and drawing. They experimented with different ways of creating sound art by circuit bending, making tape loops, gathering field recordings, and putting together digital sound arrangements. On view are sculptures of manipulated electronic toys with their companion sound compositions made into digital recordings, accompanied by a listening station with soundscapes created by four-track recorders featuring an imaginative use of source material.
